Biography
Photography has always played an important part in my life, from my first acquisition of a camera when only 10 years old to the present day I have always "made photographs". My photography was, in the beginning, just an extension to my interests such as walking, flying, climbing and sailing but gradually the photography "took over" - the climb was no longer about climbing but about capturing images, sailing wasn't about sailing but again capturing images. A desire locked away deep down in my subconscious had finally surfaced, a desire to share my experiences, what I saw, what I felt, with others through the visual language of my photography. In the summer of 2005 I decided on a career change and decided to leave the world of aerospace engineering to embark on a new career as a professional photographer. Following a two year course of study in photography at Blackpool and the Fylde College I was awarded a National Diploma in Photography and accepted on a degree course at Blackpool. After a further 3 years of study I graduated from Blackpool and the Fylde College, in 2010, with a BA(Hons) degree in Wildlife Photography. Being born and brought up in a rural environment I have always been close to nature, realising in my early life the natural beauty of the living landscape. Much of my early imagery is of the north west coast of Scotland, a rich diversity of landscape and habitat, sculpted through time by the forces of nature, images that I feel "capture nature's light". More latterly my imagery has taken on a more conceptual approach, images that depict serenity, fragility, transience, whilst also incorporating important scientific principles such as evolution, interaction and succession, imagery that "re-connects" the worlds of Art and Science to produce a new and exciting visual language.
